Versailles

We take the train to Versailles with Claude, Denali and Ursula.

Unfortunately we read the directions wrong and take the long way around on the train, losing perhaps an hour. Claude and family want to see the gardens (which we think we will see in our bike trip) so we opt to split up and go into palace. Initially we go in the wrong entrance- it is reserved for tour groups- and get ushered out by an insistent guide. The main areas of the palace are quite decorative but also quite crowded. We wonder what the back stairs life at Versailles must have been like. The constant deliveries of food and tradespeople; where all the servants slept (if they bunked with their nobles); these questions will not be answered in this current manifestation of the palace, which is dedicated to the glories of France. The crowded galleries, and Bill's experience with two flats and the guide's non-working pump on his trip, persuade us to cancel the bike trip scheduled for Friday.
